Scalable game backend and LiveOps stack for multiplayer games. Nakama from Heroic Labs handles accounts, matchmaking, leaderboards, chat and realtime multiplayer, open source or on managed Heroic Cloud.

Our take

Last updated 3 November 2026

Nakama is Heroic Labs' open-source game server for accounts, social features, leaderboards, matchmaking and realtime or turn-based multiplayer. You can self-host the open-source version for free. Heroic Cloud runs it for you with Nakama Enterprise and no player limits, priced by CPU: about $600 a month for the smallest production setup (one Nakama CPU at $400 plus one database CPU at $200).

Best for Indie and mid-size teams that want a full game backend they can own and self-host.

Pros

  • Open source and free to self-host.
  • No DAU, MAU or CCU limits on Heroic Cloud.
  • Covers accounts, social, economy and multiplayer in one server.

Cons

  • Managed hosting starts around $600 a month.
  • Self-hosting means running servers and a database yourself.
  • More backend work than a plug-in networking SDK.
