PlayFab vs Nakama: which game backend should indie developers use? (2026)

Short answer

PlayFab is cheaper to start if you do not want to run servers: Development Mode is free for up to 10 titles and 1,000 lifetime players each, and after launch you can pay only for usage, or pay $99 a month for Standard. Nakama is open source, so it is free if you self-host, while managed Heroic Cloud starts around $600 a month with no player limits. Pick PlayFab for a hosted backend with a free start; pick Nakama if you want to own and self-host your backend or want flat CPU-based pricing.

PlayFab (Microsoft) and Nakama (Heroic Labs) both give your game player accounts, leaderboards, economy and multiplayer services. Is Nakama free?

The open-source version is free to self-host. Managed Heroic Cloud is priced per CPU, starting around $600 a month for one Nakama CPU and one database CPU.
