Our take

Last updated 4 November 2026

Amp is a coding agent that runs on your own machine or in hosted 'orbs' that keep working after you close your laptop. The Hobby tier is free: self-hosted orbs cost nothing and you can bring your own ChatGPT or Claude subscription or API keys with no Amp token fees. Individual is $20 a month with 45,000 minutes of hosted orb time.

Best for Developers who want long-running coding agents for game tools, backends or web builds.

Pros

  • Free tier with bring-your-own subscriptions or keys.
  • Agents keep running in the cloud while you are away.
  • Teams at no extra charge.

Cons

  • Hosted orb time is metered.
  • You still pay for model usage through your own keys or subscriptions.
  • Aimed at experienced developers.
